Gen Z Is Redefining
Luxury Through Resale

Gen Z and millennial shoppers are changing how luxury is valued. More than 80% of The RealReal’s fastest-growing segment checks the resale market before buying new, making future value, scarcity and longevity increasingly important in purchasing decisions.
For younger consumers, buying luxury is no longer just about what an item costs today. Increasingly, they want to understand what it could be worth tomorrow.
According to The RealReal CEO Rati Sahi Levesque, more than 80% of its Gen Z and millennial shoppers check the resale market before purchasing new luxury items. As prices across the sector rise, resale is becoming a reference point for evaluating value, desirability and long-term potential.
The trend extends beyond traditional resale categories. Limited editions, unique pieces and 1990s fashion are gaining momentum as younger shoppers rediscover styles from previous decades. With the global resale market projected to reach $393 billion by 2030, the secondary market is becoming an increasingly influential part of the luxury ecosystem.
For brands, this shift offers another window into how the next generation defines value and makes purchasing decisions.
